JOURNEY FROM CHILDHOOD FASCINATION TO NUMISMATIC PASSION.

By Arav Talwar

My first recollection of coins was not their value but their look and feel: round, shiny objects that were cool to touch and jingled when you played with them. Each was unique in its way: some were bigger, some were smaller, some were silver, and others were gold. They were all from different corners of the globe, but their origin and appearance didn't matter; their luster piqued my interest.

Growing up, instead of craving toys or games, I only wanted coins. When friends and family traveled abroad, they would return not with gifts for me but with a handful of loose change they had saved for me to add to my collection. I would even scour the crevices of the sofas at home and the kitchen table for leftover coins to add to my collection. Over time, I collected coins worldwide without knowing their origin, stories, or value.

As the years went by, my love for coins grew exponentially. I delved into researching the coins from my collection, playing detective, and uncovering their hidden tales. It wasn’t just about their distinctive touch and brilliant shine anymore. My interest further evolved to focus on rarer, older coins, and I continued to study their history, political context, and how that specific form of currency affected society at that time. When I shared my passion for coins with my grandmother, she smiled and told me about my family legacy and the very old coins passed down through the generations. She rummaged through her cupboard to fetch a small pouch that contained the largest coin I had ever seen – a Queen Victoria Rupee coin from British India. It was fascinating to see a British Monarch on an Indian coin. Seeing my excitement, my grandmother decided to pass down the old coin collection to me. However, before handing them over, she made me promise that I would look after them and keep them safely as they were rare coins and family heirlooms.

From there, my personal coin collection continued to grow. Every year, as a gift, my parents would buy me one rare certified coin from The Royal Mint after I had done my due diligence and decided which coin would best elevate my collection. While studying old and rare coins, I also came across rare notes where I learned more about the history of money. I found exploring how gold and silver served as currency, enabling the exchange of goods and services, quite fascinating. My interest, which began with coins, now grew to include an interest in everything related to money and currency, including the history behind how they started.

I hope to showcase coins from my collection and share their fascinating history through this website, Coin Coffers. You will see a myriad of different coins from all around the world from different periods. I envision this website eventually evolving into a platform where coin collectors of all ages can share coins from their collections and the stories behind them. It may even become a platform where we buy, sell, and trade rare coins.

Although I still have a long way to go before calling myself a fellow numismatist, I have begun my journey.
