THE INDIAN 1966 ONE PAISA COIN
This is the 1966 India one paisa coin that were issued and introduced in 1965 and were in circulation till 1981. This coin was among the first few coin designs since India got its freedom from the British Raj in 1947. The change in shape was a distinctive feature of this coin, it was a square shaped coin. Earlier we had seen the British Indi 1 Anna coin that was a low denomination coin and was also square in shape, that could be where the idea came from. The coin was typically made of stainless steel, the obverse of this coin features the denomination “1 Paisa” written in both Hindi and English with the 1 in the centre and paisa written in both languages on either side, it also had the year of mintage written at the bottom. The reverse displays India’s national emblem, known as the Lion Capital of Ashoka. The emblem consists of four Asiatic lions that are standing back to back, mounted on a circular abacus with sculptures of an elephant, a galloping horse, and a bull and a lion separated by intervening wheels. This design is an important symbol in Indian art and is derived from the Ashoka Pillar which is an ancient sculpture constructed by Emperor Ashoka. Today, these 1 Paisa coins are part of numismatic history, representing a time when India had regained its freedom and got back on its own feet.
